    Hi SoCr@Te,

this ROM does not work on my HD-89 device. My current build number is v89_tg_20130510. I followed your instruction and while installing your ROM about 50% progress or more (I guess), I got the message back saying "Installation Aborted". I tried to download your ROM again and unzip it just to  test and it is unzipped OK. But when I put the Zip file in micro SD card 16GB (FAT32) and tried to flash your ROM, it keeps saying "Installation aborted" after 50% progress.

Strangely also, I wipe data/factory and I also wipe cache, after failing to load your ROM, I thought that my HD-89 cannot boot anymore. But it managed to come back and boot itself to the build 20130510 again…. Any idea I can manage to get your ROM to work ?

In fact I didn't want to try any ROM, I just want to root this HD-89 tablet and I cannot find the way, could you teach me how to do rooting on this device ?

    Thanks

Strangely, I do not find the name Star BD89 mentioned anywhere on internet. Every place I checked they only mentioned about Star HD89. Do you have any website that discusses about BD89 ?   Basically, I have rooted my tablet, and I want to back up my existing ROM. It seems the Clockworkmod recovery (Android recovery 3e) is installed in my tablet, but I can't back up the ROM, the menu only allows me to back up user data. I installed ROM manager in my tablet and select to back up ROM also, it rebooted my tablet into recovery mode but once again, it does not back up my ROM……strange…. How did you make the ROM for HD89 ? can you make one for BD89 too ?  thanks if you can help.

    LancelotA,

Could please tell me how (point me to a site with all of the details and tools) you have rooted your HD-89 (MT8389) tablet ?

Mine is the " Goopad 3G 7" Plus " :  http://www.orientdeal.com/goop.....nbsp;which is basically based on a HD-89 based on the MediaTek 8389 processor.

–> MT8389, double SIM, FM radio, front Camera 5M / back camera 8M pixels.

Since your post, have you found the ROM ?

Many thanks in advance if you could give me some clue on how to root it! Cheers.

    I reply my own question…

    3 pre-requisites :

    - WINDOWS PC (I would have preferred a OSX method… ;-)

    - ADB Driver (Android Universal USB Driver).

    - USB DEBUG MODE activated on your android device.

ADB Driver can be downloaded from a link within this post (describing, BTW, another untested method for rooting MT6589 devices) :  http://gleescape.com/posts/2376

    In order to root a MT6589 phone ( mine has a MTK8389 processor) download "RootGenius v1.07" here : http://www.sjroot.com/rootjl/

Despite the chinese site and hanzi characters, don't worry, RootGenius is in english and after having installed the ADB driver, activated "udb debug mode" on the device (settings), plugged your device to the PC USB port, launch RootGenius and the device will be rooted in about 2 minutes without any interaction. Amazing, enjoy!

      Hi vroom971,

Sorry for late reply, I didn't check in for a couple of days…

I tried with RootGenius downloaded directly from http://www.sjroot.com also but only with version 1.06 (which was the latest version available at that time) and it did not work on my HD-89 MTK8389 tablet.

I didn't know that v1.07 has come out now, but a word of caution regarding the RootGenius  v1.06, I found that it potentially contains a Linux worm (exploit.toor.az or something similar to this name) when I use ZoneAlarm and Kaspersky to virus-scan it, so I did not carry on further with this RootGenius tool.

Instead, I used the (motochopper) Auto Root one click tool which is found in the web site below and it works like a charm — simply using PDANet driver, making the tablet communicating with the PC and running the .bat file.

Reading the contents inside .bat file with a text editor, it seems that the tool is simply based on using basic ADB commands to make the root process, so I believe it is safer to use than the sjroot tool.

      http://droidchina.com/forum/Thread-Auto-Root-MTK6589-One-click-root

Since you have now rooted your Goopad 3G 7plus (which I am quite sure is identical to my Star HD-89, or ALPS-89 or e2003_89_tg brand (It got so many marketing names), are you able to improve your battery drain ?   On my regular use, I found from the battery information (in Settings) that the "tablet idle" is consuming 20-25% of total battery power on average, and that seems huge even if my Wi-fi/Data connection/Bluetooth/GPS are all off. I didn't use any Livewallpaper or memory-hogging live Widgets also, still the battery drain seems significant and unimpressive. I installed a Battery calibration app from Play Store and applied it, still I don't feel much improvement…

Vroom971, I just read in the link http://gleescape.com/posts/2376 that you posted above and it is actually the very same method and tool (motochopper Auto One Click) that I used to root my MTK8389 tablet…..

I'm not very experienced in Android, and I am still strugging with how to dump (and back up) my original ROM, and also how to detect what hidden apps or resources are draining my battery when the tablet is idle….

      Hello LancelotA,

My tablet characteristics, which is probably identical to yours ;-)  which is a good news in order to help eachother is :

      HARDWARE

      Commercial Name : GOODPAD Mini 3G 7"
      OEM MODEL : HD-89 (03_v89_tg)
      Manufacturer : Alps
      Board : 03_v89_tg
      Build number : 03_v89_tg_20130615
      Hardware : MT8389 / 1.2Ghz (MediaTek)
      Baseband : MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V8.P3
      Kernel : 3.4.5 (eng.root.1371283117)
      Screen : 1280 x 800
Special hardware : FM radio, 2 SIM slots.
      Front Camera : 5MP
      Back Camera : 8MP

      SOFTWARE

Android : 4.2.1 (Within the ROM)

      Installed by myself
Rooted : YES (with the tool from this site : http://www.sjroot.com/rootjl/)

      SuperSU Pro installed : YES

      My goals are :

      - To find the stock ROM:

I believed that the manufacturer is : http://shenzhen-ananda.en.ywsp.com/contact/

They haven't replied my mail in which I require a link to the stock ROM and the wholesaler (ORIENTDEAL.COM) neither.

      - To reduce battery drain. But I have installed AVAST, the ESPIER launcher/theme and Call Recorder Pro though… which might take part in the battery drain maybe.

      - TO UNDERSTAND WHY a 5MP back camera (just like the iPAD3) and a 8MP front camera have so much background noise and take really poor/bad pictures (noisy and not sharp!) while the settings have been set to maximum quality. I believe this is caused by an old firmware or the stock ROM or maybe and unfortunately, simply because the lenses and HW are cheap and of bad quality.

A last tought is to make the readers aware of an important fact you have partly mentioned. The HD89/HD-89 OEM mother board can be sold under many commercial names with quite different options. One or two SIM slots, MT6589 or MT8389 MediaTek processors (Despite the 13800 AnTuTu benchmark result for ours, I suspect the MT8389 being fake by the way… as the serial number is 123456789ABCDE and a tool told me about the processor being a 6589), RETINA screen (up to 337 PPI / 2048×1536) or not (ours is not : 1280 x 800 /  223PPI) and even with a 13MP back camera. The crazy thing is that on Orientdeal.com, I've bough the goodpad tablet at a higher price than the HD-89 which has the same characteristics (except that the "goopad mini 3G 7 plus" comes with one extra battery which was not included in the shipment anyway because DHL doesn't allow more than 2 batteries within a parcel!!!).

It is very easy (under a Microsoft Windows environment unfortunately… I prefer OSX! ;-P) to DUMP the content of the tablet (system / data) thanks to MtkDroidTools_v243.exe and build a package update.zip (with a ROM structure) which you can upload via adb. Unfortunately, like for the MT6589 ROM provided on this site (I have also tried with a minimal update.zip containing the good structure but only one file build.prop) the update failed at 40% or so with the status "Installation had failed" or "Intallation has aborted". The package can be 800MB or 30KB… the installation failed at the middle of the 8th "………." dotted line.

An update.zip should be "SIGNED" with a tool called "testsign.jar" and the structure is well explained on  many forums on the internet.

      Let's continue our investigations… ;O)

      Cheers.

    Wow! Many thanks Lock3rz!

The rom size (zipped) is 950MB.

As the ROM will be unzipped during the installation process, I guess that the content will then get probably bigger than the tablet's ROM MEMORY which is 1GB… Therefore, how can this ROM be installed ?!?

Who can create EBR1, EBR2 and MBR (if necessary) files to the internal memory for applications was 6.3 gigabytes? That is, unite 1GB for apps and the internal memory of 5.5 GB to become available in one type of memory 6.3 GB.

    Thank you!
