CyanogenMod (pronounced /s.ˈæn..ˌɛn.mɒd/) is an open-source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers, based on the Android mobile platform. It is developed as free and open source software based on the official releases of Android by Google, with added original and third-party code. It is based on a rolling release development model.

CyanogenMod offers features and options not found in the official firmware distributed by mobile device vendors. Features supported by CyanogenMod include native theming support, FLAC audio codec support, a large Access Point Name list, an OpenVPN client, Privacy Guard (per-application permission management application), support for tethering over common interfaces, CPU overclocking and other performance enhancements, unlockable bootloader and root access, soft buttons and other "tablet tweaks", toggles in the notification pull-down (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS), and other interface enhancements. CyanogenMod does not contain spyware or bloatware, according to its developers. CyanogenMod is also stated to increase performance and reliability compared with official firmware releases.

Although only a subset of total CyanogenMod users elect to report their use of the firmware, as of June 2014, CyanogenMod has recorded over 12 million active installs on a multitude of devices.

In 2013, project founder Steve Kondik announced that venture funding had been obtained to establish Cyanogen Inc. as a commercial enterprise to develop and market the firmware more widely. This announcement has led to controversy within the community, with some developers asserting that rights and licensing issues, acknowledging/compensating past developers and honoring the original ethos of the community project, are not being adequately addressed. These claims were rejected by Kondik, who affirmed support for the community and stated that most CyanogenMod code, as with Android generally, is bound by a non-restrictive Apache license.

CyanogenMod 12.1

The first nightly release of CyanogenMod 12.1, based on Android 5.1, was announced in mid April| 16 April 2015. The final build is yet to be announced as the nightly builds continue to roll out every day.

I tried to install it, but my smartphone just stucks rebooting without booting the system. Anyone experienced the same problem as mine?

I've made the same as Milazzo87 and it works also for me.

In the daily use I've found some problem with cyanogen built-in torch light (if you leave it on for too long, you can't turn it off. If you start the camera then the light turn off and camera crashes).

Sadly, Google DUO doesn't work… It crashes when you try to connect to another person.

I've found problems on other apps…

I hope for a future update. It's a great work, my battery life is DOUBLED.

Is this ROM now fully functional with no bugs? Is the performance decent (i.e. as good or better than stock)? I would like to try this ROM but need a ROM without issues.

I’ve tried this ROM over the last few days and although the performance is great and I love the features of Cyanogen, there are quite a few small but annoying bugs:
    - Camera mostly works, but has occasional image issues and is often extremely laggy and sometimes crashes..
    - Flashlight generally doesn’t work. I tried the built in one and an app but they both worked once then didn’t work again. I could get the LED to work light a torch by turning on the bulb flash mode in the camera app.
    - Screen rotation is buggy and often freezes or atleast becomes very laggy.
    - Proximity sensor is buggy: the screen will usually not wake up when taking the phone away from my ear and thus makes it extremely difficult to hang up calls.
    - Keyboard: when using swipe typing sometimes the keyboard will ignore the word you just typed so you have to type it again. When tapping on a word to correct it, often it will insert the corrected word inside the incorrect word.
    - Music plays slowly over Bluetooth thus making it sound slightly odd and deep. (I think this might be a general problem this build of cyanogen.)

It’s a shame as this could be a great ROM, but I think are too many issues for me to use it full time.

P.S. The FM radio worked fine for me.

      Hi mate,

plz forgive my ignorance, all this is new to me. I think these bugs are too annoying, which actualy leaves us with a useless rom. My guess is that unless an update to fix them is created, you cannot fix them by using an app from the store. Plus, do you know a custom rom for the VF-895N, that is not buggy?

      Thx a lot!

There are only 3 ROMs at the moment and none of them work 100% properly. The MIUI is very buggy from what I hear. I tried the 'Debloated + Cleaned' ROM, which is apparently a 100% stock rom but without the junk, but I had huge performance issues and massive lags and crashes very frequently, and I know that other people have had the same problems.

Seems that the original stock firmware is still by far the best option.

However, there is someone working on a Cyanogen 13 (Marshmallow) ROM, though I'm not sure when it will be ready (if ever…).
