DESCRIPTION

This backup will allow you to restore a Google Setup Wizard enabled version of the Kobo Arc 7HD ROM, which is rooted and has tweaks applied. It also when complete, will no longer require you to have or use a Kobo Account. Your device must be rooted to do this. Full directions below. Kudos to the XDA folks for working on a custom recovery for this unit.

Kobo Arc 7HD Google Play + Tweaks + Root

Be aware that flashing a ROM or restoring from a backup can be the cause of failure. I do not take any responsibility for bricked or damaged devices! Follow the directions and you should be fine.

Active support for the Kobo 7HD has been retired, which leaves many users with a really lacking tablet. The good news is that we can fix this to a certain extent. I’m not a developer per se, but I do have experience with tweaking and “hacking around”in Android ROMS, especially ROMS that can’t be ported or replaced.

Directions:

1.) Ensure your tablet is fully charged and setup. This means you will need to create a Kobo Account if you don’t already have one.

2.) Your tablet needs to be rooted. At the time of writing, the best way to do this is with King Root. Visithttps://kingroot.net/and follow the directions to root your tablet. (You will need to enable USB Debugging by opening Settings in your tablet and scrolling down to “About Kobo Arc 7HD”. Tab the build number 7 times. You should see a small message that you are now a developer. Hit the back button and you will now see Developer options. Tap it and tap the checkbox for USB Debugging)

3.) Visit https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507886 and follow the directions for installing custom recovery. Make sure you download the correct recovery! For ADB, visit https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979

4.) If everything has gone to plan, you should now be in recovery. Use the volume keys to navigate to backups and use the power slider to confirm. Once in the backup section, create a backup. We need to do this before restoring a backup in case something goes wrong. Once complete, reboot to Android by navigating back to the main recovery screen and select reboot.

5.) Copy the backup folder to your Kobo device. You will need a file manager for Android that can read and write in hidden system areas in order to work with the backups. I use Root Explorer (Paid) but there may be free ones that can get the job done. CWM by default creates backups at /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/. Use your root file manager to move the backup you downloaded into the /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/ folder. To correctly move the backup, be sure to only move the folder “2017-09-20.05.38.08”and all files inside that folder. When you are done, the backup files should be inside /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/2017-09-20.05.38.08/.

6.) Turn off your Tablet and leave the USB cable unplugged. Wait roughly 10 seconds after the screen turns off. Hold the volume down button and while holding it, slide the power on. You should see the Kobo boot logo with small black text at the top saying it is booting to recovery. Navigate CWM and this time under Backups, restore a backup, specifically 2017-09-20.05.38.08.

7.) Once the restore is finished, you need to navigate to the root of the recovery menu and perform a factory wipe.

8.) Navigate to the root recovery menu and reboot to Android. If it worked, your Kobo will boot as normal. However, the blue Kobo screen may suddenly get stuck as the dots stop moving back and forth. Simply swipe as if you are unlocking the screen and you will see the Google Setup Wizard. Once the wizard is finished, it will load to a black screen. Simply hit the Home button at the lower part of the screen and the launcher will activate and walk you through preferences for that launcher.

9.) Enjoy your Kobo device without the need for Kobo accounts! You have root access, and the basic Kobo apps are there if you need them.
