Install ROM:
 V2 and up

Download desired zip and copy on sdcard.

You need a modified recovery to install the firmware and updates. If you have it already, proceed to step 3. If you don't have, follow these steps:

1. Download Lenovo drivers, unzip the archive. Turn off the phone and remove battery. Open device manager and connect the phone to PC. Watch for new devices. It will be displayed as МТ65хх Preloader. You need to be quick, because it will dissapear in some second. Click on it with the right button and select update driver. Point the wizard to the driver folder, it will install the correct driver automatically.
If it doesn't work with removed battery you can try to power on the phone and turn on developer options in settings or enter meta mode – hold Volume Down and Power buttons. Then connect the phone to PC again.
2. Download and extract Recovery zip and Flash tools. Run Flash Tools, click on DL DA All With Check Sum, load the scatter file located in Recovery folder, uncheck Preloader and hit Download (F6). Remove battery from phone and connect it to PC. When done, a green circle will appear.
3. Enter recovery mode – hold Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons until you see the logo. Make a backup of your current system first. Install new zip.

    Infrared,

I’ve been playing with the phone a lot today, customising and installing apps. I’ll share some observations.

First I ditched stock launcher and ran with Nova Prime. I use WidgetLocker instead of stock lockscreen. I’ve ditched stock messaging for GoSMS Pro, and Dialer & Contacts for PixelRush, with an install of GoContacts spending most of its time frozen by TitaniumBackup but available for need of importing vcf’s. It seems to have made a nice, stable system. I moved contacts from SIM to phone, and see no more issues with the chinese characters or duff caller ID. This seems a decent set of workarounds until a fixed ROM.

Among issues still to address are the ability to change system fonts, since I seem to be stuck with a chinese compatible font rather than a variety. Also I’ve noticed on both my A820′s that the stock dialler and contacts apps keep disappearing completely from app tray and TitaniumBackup, and a ROM reinstall is the only available solution.

I'm customizing the stock launcher. I like to keep stock applications and not include paid/third party apps. This is up to the user if he/she wants to customize the phone further.

The issue with the callerId is present on my phone even when phone numbers are imported into phone storage (I don't keep them in the sim). It depends on the country, but doesn't work in Bulgaria if the stored phone number doesn't start with the country code (+359), but 0 instead. However, when someone calls, phone can't match the id, because incoming call number starts with +359 and minimum digits to match was set too high. I've lowered it to 8 digits, so +359888888888 would match 0888888888. All GSM numbers in Bulgaria start with 08 (+3598).

Chinese characters are the city, which in my case matches 2 chinese city names for all contacts (depending on the starting code), except special 3-digits numbers like 112. They match as Unknown City. Anyway, this cities are irrelevant to any other country, so I will see how to remove them, but first need to finish the launcher. Tried several versions of LenovoLauncher, including the latest one, which I really liked, but it's missing the tabs in app drawer pages and I'm not sure if I'm able to bring them back. Otherwise it looks similar to MiHome launcher.

Will look after the fonts issue, but it's not a top priority at the moment.

Btw, there's a hungarian rom that is close to a clean stock JB 4.1.2, does not include lenovo apps. You can try it, there was a thread in xda, but can't find the link atm.

infrared, please keep it the way you are doing it atm! Android is the system one can configuere to his liking anytime. So your ROM as a stable and solid base is just what is fit for this purpose.

As long as all the apps are running and there are no FCs all is fine for most people. If you just fix what is broken, I guess that you have lots to do anyhow. For me the ROM is near perfect. The only thing I´d like to see adressed is the issue with widgetsoid´s failure to restart the phone (anything other than a hot reboot doesn´t work).

So thanx again for your great work and I hope v2.3 will fix the rest of the few remaining issues!

Has anyone tried to install the rom from Lenovo A830 with Android 4.2 on A820?

    Infrared,

As you say, these are mostly cosmetic and not priority, they certainly don’t affect the functionality of the phone.

I’m struggling at the moment with the disappearance of stock Phone and Contacts apps. I can’t see them in TitaniumBackup to either re-enable or restore. Do you know of a way to get them back that doesn’t involve a factory reset?

Scratch that… I eventually worked out that the stock Contacts and Phone in this ROM are not identified separately as 'Contacts' or 'Phone' or 'Dialer' but rather as the 'IdeaFriend' module. I had assumed that this was some kind of Facebook/Social Media integration module, and disabled it in TitaniumBackup.

All restored now, and back to playing….

There's still a Phone app, but IdeaFriend combines contacts, dialer and messages in one UI. I've fixed the city labels – they are not displayed anymore.

Infrared, thank you very much! This rom is great but sometimes light sensor too late got fix – after about 10 s. display got proper lightness.

Now I have a question. In my device at file manager I can see

Device, sdcard0 (wich is internal memory also), and sdcard1 – which is proper SDCARD. What I can do to have only Internal memordy and Proper SDCARD?

    How I can fix it?

    Thank you!

mcvh, I can confirm that it doesn't work, but still need to test it on a stock ROM. I want to extend the power menu with Reboot functionallity, so in case I'm not able to fix the issue with widgetsoid, you will still have an alternative option.

balludabidab, it has to do with partitioning. There are some articles over the internet how to repartition the phone storage, but I haven't done it before and I'm not sure I'm able to do it. There's also an app "android partition manager", but never tried it.

Infrared… Well done! You really are cracking this thing open, and we're very grateful. It's nice to be able to use this phone in the UK. It really is a bargain that more people should be able to benefit from.

I'm just about to try Cappa's ROM on my second A820. Had a nightmare trying to find a properly fixed A820 version of CWMRecovery, though…
