i bought my z7 max last month.
your 3.9.6 is ui version .system version is 3.8.4
my 3.8.6 is system version .ui version is 4.0!
you can't direct update this rom from 3.9.6 . Otherwise there will be a lot of stop errors.but you can wipe those app cache，such as desktop cache.
You'd better make full wipes，and use twrp to Return system 3.7.9.then you can update with ota。

1.if you have lots of app or data,you can update direct,after that,reboot,there will be a lot of errors,don't worry,From the notification bar into settings，find apps，all，then clear that app's data and cache
2.make full wipes with twrp,flash 379,then flash 386
