Install ROM:
 V2 and up

Download desired zip and copy on sdcard.

You need a modified recovery to install the firmware and updates. If you have it already, proceed to step 3. If you don't have, follow these steps:

1. Download Lenovo drivers, unzip the archive. Turn off the phone and remove battery. Open device manager and connect the phone to PC. Watch for new devices. It will be displayed as МТ65хх Preloader. You need to be quick, because it will dissapear in some second. Click on it with the right button and select update driver. Point the wizard to the driver folder, it will install the correct driver automatically.
If it doesn't work with removed battery you can try to power on the phone and turn on developer options in settings or enter meta mode – hold Volume Down and Power buttons. Then connect the phone to PC again.
2. Download and extract Recovery zip and Flash tools. Run Flash Tools, click on DL DA All With Check Sum, load the scatter file located in Recovery folder, uncheck Preloader and hit Download (F6). Remove battery from phone and connect it to PC. When done, a green circle will appear.
3. Enter recovery mode – hold Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons until you see the logo. Make a backup of your current system first. Install new zip.

※Please make a backup of your device before installing or updating ROM

    Infrared,

Results from your tip are that the phone_city.bin file recreates itself every time the app loads. Delete it, delete contacts, reboot to CwM, wipe cache, reboot, open Ideafriend and badabing… The new phone_city has a creation time of the moment you opened the app.

Chinese characters and ‘unknown city’ are back no matter what.

What would be interesting would be whether the file could be recreated with European regionalisation. I’ve seen third party phone apps (can’t remember which) which were able to pin UK numbers to their primary exchange by city name as well as identify country codes by name. Toying with just disabling Ideafriend and running with Pixelrush or exDialer. The only major downside is that the inbuilt incoming call handler (phone) still uses the chinese characters/city to identify numbers onscreen, and also you lose stock messaging and have to go with something like GoSMS Pro which is bloated and unwieldy and has just as serious a bunch of issues with caller/messager ID depending on whether you store numbers by their regional dial area codes or store them with the country code prefix.

Yep, that's because the file is inside the app. My fixed app doesn't contain that file, but the updated one does. That's why I thought it might work if you remove all permissions from the file via Root Explorer/ES File Explorer, so it can't be accessed by any app.

Other variant would be not just remove permissions, but delete the original file and create a blank text file with the same name, then change the extension from txt to bin, remove all rights except read. Then remove contacts, clear cahce and import again. If IdeaFriend doesn't crash because of this, then it might be a good temporary solution.

Next thing would be to hunt down where that code is executed and complete the call completely, I will see what I can do. Meanwhile, could you provide me the updated IdeaFriend app, I can probably fix it for ya.

I deleted phone_city file and removed all permissions of parent directory – files. This way ot works. Thanks for tip infrared.

Yes, removing permissions works just fine. Thanks, I see Infrared is a wizard in this. If you can assist us develop the area of new update that was released, it would be fine, I think it will still contain all unessential Chinese apps and all other customisations already done in A820_S138_multiLanguage_V1. Or will the update be based on this ROM? Kindly guide me through that.

    Infrared,

How do I do that for you, and where do I send it?

Update: yes, killing all permissions on the file directory solves the issue of rebuilding the chinese city matching file. Now how to prevent the app updating again, or build a one-run script to nuke the city matching on updated versions. Alternatively to investigate replacing the file with localised EU versions.

Thanks for your response. I actually followed all the steps, I deleted contacts, messages and call logs. I even deleted phone city database and anything that I saw had "phonecity". Of course I applied patch 2.2.1 and deleted cache and dalvic cache in the process. Fearing that the stored contacts could contain stores city, I took the pain of restoring each number individually, manually. It did not work for me, the moment I enter mobile contact, certain characters in Chinese show up. I gave up and restored them through sd card vsf, the same happened. The main issue is, "phonecity" restores itself automatically, no matter how many times you delete it. Hope a solution will come up soon but I appreciate a lot from your kindness to make the Chinese phones usable in other parts of the world.

Sorry for the newbie question, but after reading through many posts an forums i'm not successful in installing the 2.2 ROM onto my new A820… What are the exact steps i have to do? My current stock rom is "Lenovo A820_S139_130422"

What i have done for now:

    - Copied the 2.2 ROM zip "as is" to an empty SD-Card

    - booted the phone in recovery-mode (by pressing vol up+down and power)

    - selected apply update from sdcard2

    - selected the perviously copied zip file

Then the installation was aborted with an error…

    Further questions:

What are the exact steps to install the 2.2.1 patch?

And what else is necessary? LenovoSystemUI-mod-CWM?

Hope anyone may help me :)

      Not that "update" option

Use option: "install" zip from sdcard

Jos, you need to use RootExplorer to remove all permissions on the directory that the phone_city file is in. It can’t reinstate itself, then.

Sorry for the newbie question too, but anyone could help me with a good tutorial to install this rom? I need to install all the versions or i should install only 2.2 and after this, 2.2.1. I'm with some serious problems to find the txt file to load in the flashtool program. Anyway, i didn't understand the instructions up there (V1 – Install ROM). I'm waiting for a response, please.

    Tks.
