Okay, thanks for that mate.  I'll give it a shot.

But this seems to be a temporary fix to an ongoing problem, no?  If this is only a fix whilst in France, what happens if I need to use the GPS in, for instance, Italy or Spain?  Will I have to pull over to the side of the road and modify the gps.conf file at the border?  ;o)

no, that's just the NTP server information. and since you're in france it's fastest to put a server in/for france in the config.

the fix is not temporary (unless you reinstall/update OS). and it works.

i tried it just now on my 20km way to the gym. gps fix took about 10-15 seconds. i'm in germany.

BUT… even though it connects to 10-12 satelites, it seems to lose connection every now and then so the navigation software sometimes does not know where you are for 3-10 seconds, then it finds your postion again. sometimes it works without any problems. but occasionally gps is "jumpy" which is not cool.

i don't know if it's an antenna-issue or hardware-issue or just a driver-issue. but since i did not have to drive through the city i don't think it's an antenna issue. i believe it's either hardware (which would be really bad) or just a driver issue. i hope it's the latter but i fear its not ;)

Yup, that's what I was afraid of.  Stevelee1000 (in the US) mentions the same thing in his comment a few pages back.

That's not good enough for me… like you say, not cool. What's the point in GPS if it can't be relied upon.  Looking at the wikipedia article about Mediatek, it seems that this MTK6589T SoC doesn't include a separate GPS chip, but rather (I'm guessing) an onboard one.  Looking at that table, I think I'll be waiting until the release of the new batch of MTK6592 octo-core phones with actual GPS receivers in them, to be released early next year.  (although why they're still not including a TD-LTE radio, I haven't a clue).

In the meantime, I think I'll sell the X2 and look for a 2nd-hand Galaxy S4 (about another €100).  So for now, it's back to my crappy old iPhone 4.  Ugh.

Yeah, the phone would be great bargain if the connection issues weren't there.

that's a bit of a shame. WiFi and HSDPA don't work perfectly either.

I've got an ASUS Tablet, also with MTK Chipset (8125) and everything works fine. So I was hoping this MTK Chipset would be as good. But the connection problems start to annoy me.

I found the Wifi Fixer app sorted the contantly dropping wifi connections.  But agreed… the H/H+ connections are super dodgy.  Different ROMs have given me different results with these.  Some ROMs even caused the cell signal to drop out altogether, at least once every 5 mins.  Drove me totally nuts.  Been a bit of a dissappointing experience for me to be honest.  I love all other aspects of the phone, but the fact that it doesn't reliably do such basic stuff that my old iPhone's done for the last 3 years, well, it's unacceptable really.

that sadly pretty much sums it up. H/H+ seemed to be fine to me since today. i had the issue like it did not recognize the SIM all of a sudden and then rotate between E/G/H/H+ even though i was standing still and signal was good. i don't understand how it can have good connection(s) and then drop them for 2-3 seconds just to be good again.

it looks like a driver-issue to me. or some configuration is not spot on. that's why i still hope for a better/fixed rom… :-/

you might not want to use "wifi fixer" app when following my instructions concerning gps from above. i read somewhere that it might reset those settings. not sure though.

Kaltblut… call me stupid, but how do I copy the gps.conf file to the root of the phone?  I created a text file, pasted in the info you gave, saved it, renamed it (including changing the file extension to .conf), and copied it to the SD card.  (I figure I need to set the permissions from the phone itself, rather than on my Win7 machine).  But now I'm trying to copy it from the SD card to the device root (with X-plore or ES File Explorer), but it's not happening, coz it keeps complaining "open failed:  Error: EROFS - read-only file system".  Can you suggest a method for this, and to set permissions?  Cheers mate.

you can do that with an app like "root browser" which has access to the phone's operating system partition. and of course you have to allow it root access when asked.

Okay, will try that.  (also, I don't have a gps.conf file already in the /etc directory, so there's nothing to overwrite… normal?)

i did not have gps.conf in \etc either. don't know why. i checked my tablet, there's also no gps.conf. it worked for me nonetheless.
